Viracocha ~ 998 Valencia st.

Cinewhores is a celebration and exploration of Whores in classic film. Join us for discussion, film watching and a Q & A with our special guest. This month we will will be showing "Pretty Woman". You thought it was only a silly 80's movie, perhaps. Come and let us know what you think.

The Past ~ Cinewhores was launched in 2008 and did a successful eight month run at ATA. Dildos were given away, poets stripped down and the voices of the populace were intelligent thoughtful and delighted to discourse on the subjects of sexuality, scorn, feminism, drag, racism and whether or not Holly Go Lightly was really a prostitute. At that time Cinewhores served to let people know about the upcoming magazine and all proceeds went to St. James Infirmary(the free clinic for sex workers). The magazine is now out and so we are happy to start up Cinewhores again. the magazine will be available for sale and fun films will be explored. We have a whole new series for you including those wild and wicked brilliant silent cinematic expressions from the 20's with a live musical soundtrack.

The last series films included:
Breakfast at Tiffanies
Blond Venus
Breathless
Midnight Cowboy
Butterfield Eight
Miss Sadie Thompson
Klute
and
The World of Susie Wong.

We look forward to this incarnation and hope you will join us for fun, film and the support of Viracocha-a community space, gallery and store that is aiding new culture in all kinds of ways.

The Amazing and Fantastic Rykarda Parasol!

Thanks to everyone for their interest in the magazine. Due to the rather long process it took to get the mag out some of our artists have evolved beyond what we have written in the pages. One of these, the amazing and brilliant Rykarda Parasol has gone solo with the masterful follow-up album "For Blood and Wine.“

Rykarda, "For this record, I wanted to tell my stories with a nod to my city’s roots, San Francisco was once a settlement town filled with outlaws and gold miners. It was referred to as ‘The Barbary Coast’ back then.. This city may not otherwise be bearable without connecting to its lore. But of course, the record’s lyrics are also inspired by certain English poets: William Auden, Christina Rossetti, and in particular ‘The Ballad of Reading Goal’ by Oscar Wilde. This time around I focused even more so on the lyrics and inner rhythm of the sound of words themselves, their meaning, and all over poetic devices. Symbolism is my weakness.”

The album was self-produced by Parasol and is a true-life narrative depicting the progress and downward spiral of a rake, which in this case is female.

Rykarda, “It’s witty, darkly romantic, edgy and elegant… It’s tales of infidelity, addiction, and death. Mostly sad, but some real moments of joy and hope.”

Rykarda is also a guest vocalist and writer with Kabanjak of Ancient Astronauts on his forthcoming fall solo release, a profile in San Francisco photographer Audra Marie Dewitt's book focusing on a diverse group of women in music (available summer 2011), and a recording collaboration with Lilofee guitarist Rob Easson to be released this fall.
